My name is Sophie Jenkins, I have been sewing diraac sets for around five years now; and it was often suggested to me I start a business from it; so here I am. For those wondering; no I am not Somali or Yemeni, but I am a convert to Islam of many years now who has a great affinity with those cultures.
I have had a double page article published in SISTERS magazine about diraacs; and have also contributed to an article about traditional wedding clothing from around the world.
If you are unfamiliar with diraacs; here is a little bit of information to fill you in. A diraac is a three piece dress set, consisting of a diaphanous top dress made using the full width of the fabric (this is the diraac itself), a full elasticated underskirt (usually called gogorad), and a shawl usually made in silk or fine chiffon fabrics (called garbasar).
Diraacs come in all kinds of styles, from the mundane and everyday; to heavily embellished or beaded versions for weddings and special occasions. As with other traditional outfits such as Shalwar Kameez; the name refers to the basic shape of the outfit; here are no hard or fast rules regarding the fabrics or colours that can be used; so the diraac is a highly flexible garment. Like all traditional clothing in the modern era; diraacs are affected by certain fashions and trends and hopefully I will be filling you in on those; in my blog.
I believe my diraac sets are very unique and special, I choose all the elements of the set myself seperately and put them together even if it means having to travel fairly long distances and spend hours in the fabric shop getting it right. I have told I have an amazing eye for colour and pattern co-ordination, and my services have often been called upon as a 'personal shopper'. My personal quality control is incredibly high. Occasionally the fabrics used; due to them being manufactured in traditional ways can have slight flaws, marks etc despite my best efforts, if this happens I will inform you of this in the description in the shop.
As I am working from home, and have limited space I am only able to offer a more limited stock range at the moment but I do get new stock whenever I can so please do keep checking back. For safety reasons I am not able to publish my address or telephone on this site; but you can be assured I am a confirmed and verified premier paypal member so when you pay there is that extra protection (and my details are available to those paying via paypal also). You can contact me whenever you like using the form on the site or email me at diraac@hotmail.co.uk
